Battle of Britain VC

Limited Edition Print | Signed by Robert Taylor and Eric Knightley

This remarkable and historically significant aviation print commemorates one of the most extraordinary acts of bravery during the Battle of Britain.

The artwork depicts Flight Lieutenant James Nicolson earning the Victoria Cross on August 16, 1940, during the height of the Battle of Britain. Nicolson holds the distinction of being the only RAF Fighter Command pilot to receive the Victoria Cross during the entire Second World War.

Despite sustaining serious wounds during the engagement in which he earned the award, Nicolson returned to active service. He later served in Burma as a Squadron Leader, where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

By 1945, promoted to Wing Commander, Nicolson was stationed at the headquarters of the 3rd Tactical Air Force in Comilla, Bengal. Tragically, on May 2, 1945, he lost his life while serving as an observer aboard a B-24 Liberator that suffered an engine fire. Most of the crew perished in the crash.

Among the two survivors was air gunner Eric Knightley, who later signed this print alongside artist Robert Taylor, adding a remarkable personal connection to this historical tribute.
