The Battle for Britain
Limited Edition Proof Print | No. 126/200 | Fifteen Signatures
This dramatic aviation artwork captures a head-on aerial encounter high above the port of Dover during the late morning of July 10, 1940, marking the beginning of the Battle of Britain.
A Spitfire of No. 610 Squadron, flown by Squadron Leader Andrew Smith, engages a Messerschmitt Bf 109 of I./JG 3 in a fierce midair confrontation. Following the encounter, Smith was forced to crash-land his damaged aircraft at Hawkinge. Tragically, the gallant squadron commander would lose his life just two weeks later following another engagement with German fighters.
