Moral Support
Limited Edition Print | Signed by Captain Peter Townsend and Robert Taylor
This evocative Robert Taylor print is inspired by an extraordinary act of courage and leadership during the Battle of Britain, as recounted by Group Captain Peter Townsend.
While commanding No. 85 Squadron, Townsend witnessed his Flying Officer, Jim Marshall, struggling to keep his Hurricane airborne following a collision. Townsend remained alongside the crippled aircraft, using hand signals to guide Marshall safely back to their base at RAF Debden. Against the odds, the damaged Hurricane made a successful landing.
It was a remarkable example of the unselfish leadership and composure that made Townsend one of the RAF's most highly regarded fighter pilots.
Earlier in the war, Townsend was credited with bringing down the first German aircraft to crash on English soil. His wartime record included nine confirmed victories, two shared victories, two probable victories and four aircraft damaged.
Following the war, from 1944 to 1953, Peter Townsend served as Equerry to King George VI.
