The Roll Call – Lady Elizabeth Butler

The Roll Call, also known as Calling the Roll After an Engagement, Crimea, is one of the most celebrated British paintings of the 19th century.

Originally painted in 1874, the artwork depicts a roll call of soldiers from the Grenadier Guards following an engagement during the Crimean War. Although often associated with the aftermath of the Battle of Inkerman in 1854, Lady Elizabeth Butler intended the scene to represent a more general moment from the war.

The painting attracted extraordinary attention when it was exhibited at the Royal Academy. In an unusual honor, it was removed from the exhibition walls and taken to Buckingham Palace for Queen Victoria to view privately. So impressed was the Queen that she purchased the original painting for the Royal Collection.

This print by Lady Elizabeth Butler captures the emotional weight and quiet heroism of a defining period in British military history.
